Lately I’ve been struggling to find peace and quiet.

Anyone know what I mean? It’s like life. just. doesn’t. STOP.

You feel like you’re drowning–like all of the air has gone out of your lungs and you can’t get anymore of it back in. You feel like you constantly have a headache–but it’s not just your head, it’s your whole entire body. You’re tired. You’re worn.

And that one little phone call today just put you over the edge. How can I keep going? When can I rest?

Friends, I have found that no amount of napping and no amount of “me time” (i.e. reading, manicures, shopping, or relaxing on the beach) can fix this type of weariness.

This type of weariness is actually thirst.

When we get to this point, we’re not running out of air, we’re running out of the unquenchable water we’ve been trying to depend on (ourselves, our own abilities, our own plans).

It’s time to come to the fountain of living water that will never run dry.

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.)The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” {John 4:1-15}

At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” {Matthew 11:25-30}

So what does this mean for you, here, today, now?

It means cutting something out. It means slowing down. It means when the kids are napping, get off the couch and get on your knees. Instead of going out shopping, make a coffee stop and crack open the word. It means going for a walk and reviewing that book of the bible you’ve been trying to memorize. It means sacrificing what you want to do, and realizing that your time is not your own. God has blessed you with life today, and your time is HIS time.

Let’s spend it with our Savior today. Let’s drink of the living water and rest in the Lord, knowing that 1) He is in control of our lives (Proverbs 16:9), and 2) He knows what He’s doing, and it’s for our good (Romans 8:28)!
