We live in a world where technology is all around us. It’s a pretty cool thing, you know, being able to connect with people all over the world with just a few clicks. But for me, it’s also a temptation–a temptation to compare myself to what I see before my eyes when I pop open Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
When I first discovered the world of bloggers with pretty Instagram feeds, I went crazy following them all because their pictures were so pretty…and, well, I wanted to fill my feed with incredible pictures of Paris and peonies. But soon, it became a whole lot more than that…
Soon, I began to compare myself with women whose job it was to travel the world and blog about it. You know, bloggers who have every fashion designer, restaurant chain and makeup line begging at their feet to post good things about their products for advertising purposes because they have so many followers. And then I began to look at my life–my seemingly boring life–and compare it to their glamorous gallivants.
Some of these bloggers wake up in a new European city every week (which is wonderful and fantastic, and if that’s you, I am so happy for you)! But me? Well, on a typical Saturday morning, you can find me sleepy-eyed, drinking coffee on my living room couch in a house that’s a mess with laundry that needs done…but all I’ve got time for is a quick shower before my riveting adventure to Home Depot, so I throw some mousse in my messy wet hair and head out the door to once again get paint sticks and light bulbs.
The truth is, I often feel like my life could be so much more exciting. If only I had more money, I could travel abroad. If only I wasn’t so busy, I could read more books, take up sewing and resume piano lessons. If only our house were more updated, I could be more confident about having people over…and the list goes on.
But this is wrong, so wrong. I have realized that I need to stop looking at myself and my life as “not enough” and start being thankful for every blessing God has given me and be a good steward over everything I have! Sure, I’m not traveling the world every other week, but I have an amazing husband, a beautiful little home, an incredible family, a great job, a wonderful church and SO much more.
My goal in the coming weeks is to make a habit of giving thanks and focusing on the life God has given me. With everything i am, I need to pour myself into living well and loving others… Right. Where. I. Am. Because my life should be about glorifying God in everything I do, not about filling my time with temporary, worldly happiness.
And so comparing myself to others stops today, and I’m praying that God will give me the grace to do it. Won’t you join me?
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:15-17
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:17

Just what I needed today. Thank you, sis, for allowing God to use you to remind me of how awesome my life is because of Him! I am excited to be alongside you, praying that we both can stop comparing and start thanking God for all that He is and what He has done. 🙂 I hope you continue to have a good day through Him. God knew I would bypass this entry and read it just when He wanted to get His message across and that’s really cool!

Thank you for reinforcing the message I heard this weekend at church. So quickly we become busy again with life … and fail to let the message we just heard really, truly, sink in. Coming to your blog today, and reading this post was prompted by that ‘still small voice’ as a reminder of what I just heard on Sunday. May God bless you, Jen – and keep on blogging!
