As a woman, there are moments in life when it’s easy to feel like I don’t measure up. It’s easy to compare myself to others and begin to feel unworthy, unbeautiful, unlovely. It’s easy to feel not smart enough, not popular enough, not good enough.

I can’t help but wonder if this struggle is much harder for my generation than it was for those that grew up without technology. Today, it seems so much easier to covet another person’s life because their updates and photos are in our faces constantly. Regardless, a friend of mine once told me that we can’t compare our behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel. And it’s so true! If I sit here and compare my imperfect skin and body to the photoshopped images of my favorite celebrity bloggers, how on earth could I ever measure up?

Ladies, when we feel like we’re “not enough,” we need to recognize that those feelings are just lies. And ladies, when we choose to believe them, we choose to believe the enemy. But if we choose to fight the lies, to kill them and to run from them, we can embrace the fact that we belong to Christ and that our identity, worth and value are found in him alone.

It’s a fight, but it’s a fight that’s freeing. Below are three lies I struggle with that are common to women my age, and I’ve contrasted them with the truth of God’s word. If you’re struggling to believe what God says about your worth, write these on an index card, tape them to your mirror, preach them to yourself and let them encourage you daily~God knows I need to.

I am not good enough

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (2 Corinthians 12:9)

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)

I am nothing special

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. (Psalm 139:13-14)

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)

My worth as a woman is in my appearance

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. (1 Peter 3:3-4)

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. (Proverbs  31:30)
